El fotolibro de la semana | Photobook of the week: Up and down Peachtree. Photographs of Atlanta (Martin Parr, Contrasto, 2012).

Coincidiendo –en fechas- con la exposición “Souvenir” en el CCCB (Centro de Cultura Contemporánea de Barcelona) Martin Parr publica su más reciente libro “Up and Down Peachtree”.

El libro nos muestra el trabajo realizado por Parr en Atlanta durante el año pasado, que se expondrá del 8 de junio al 2 de septiembre de este año en una gran exposición en el “High Museum”.

Siguiendo con su visión crítica e implacable y su fascinación por el turismo, el consumo y la manera en que la gente invierte su tiempo libre, Parr nos hace llegar una nueva colección de fotografías con su inconfundible estilo que lo ha hecho tan famoso. En este caso, su trabajo se centra en Atlanta, Estados Unidos, en un trabajo encargado ex profeso para una exposición.

El título del libro viene del nombre de la calle que dio origen a la ciudad de Atlanta, la simbólica capital del sur de América famosa, entre otras cosas, por la película “Lo que el viento se llevó”, por ser la cuna de Martin Luther King Jr y la sede de la compañía Coca Cola a la cual Parr le dedica una estupenda fotografía en su muy particular estilo.

¿Qué tiene pues de nuevo este trabajo y libro?, para empezar se nota que se le ha dedicado un esfuerzo y tiempo importante, se nota también una intención por ir más allá de lo superficial –algo por lo que Martin Parr es muy criticado- y se aprecia la labor de un editor (Contrasto) por realizar una edición cuidada, bien conceptualizada y con  todos los elementos de lo que es un buen fotolibro. Desde que se tiene el libro en las manos, te das cuenta que no es un libro más de Martin Parr. Su puesta en página es excelente, la secuencia de fotografías es impecable y el tratamiento gráfico y materiales son perfectos. Es, en mi opinión, uno de los grandes libros de Martin Parr.

Para todos los que conocen el universo Martin Parr este trabajo es refrescante y para los que no, este es un libro que definitivamente contiene todas las claves para entender el trabajo de este fotógrafo y su lenguaje tan personal que hacen de él un personaje indispensable en la fotografía contemporánea.

Coinciding in publication date with the inauguration of the exhibition Souvenir at the Centro de Cultura Contemporánea de Barcelona, Martin Parr is presenting his most recent book: Up and Down Peachtree.

The book gathers the work done by Parr in Atlanta over the last year, which will be on display in a major exhibition at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta from June 8^th to September 2^nd.

Following up on his fascination with tourism, consumerism, and the way people spend their leisure time, Parr offers a new collection of photographs in the unmistakably mordant and implacable style that has made him famous. In this case, his work focuses on the American city of Atlanta, Georgia, in a project commissioned specially for the exhibition.

The title of the book refers to the main drag of Atlanta, the symbolic capital of the American South and a city famous for being, among other things, the setting of the motion picture Gone with the Wind, the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the headquarters of Coca-Cola, to which Parr dedicates a marvelous photograph in his inimitable style.

What is new about the project and the book? It is clear that Parr has dedicated considerable time and effort to going beneath the surface—though he is often criticized for his supposed superficiality—and that the publisher Contrasto has produced a meticulous, well conceptualized volume, with all the elements of a good photobook. One notices immediately that this is not just another book by Martin Parr. The layout is excellent, the sequence of photographs is impeccable, and the graphic treatment and materials are perfect. In my opinion, it is one of Martin Parr’s great books.

For all those familiar with Martin Parr’s world, this volume is refreshing, and for those new to his work, it is a book that contains the keys to understanding the very personal language of this photographer, an indispensable figure on the panorama of contemporary photography.
